New World Orewa Case Study

Our Worm Farms are composting up to 3 tonnes of organic Supermarket waste annually.

While this is just a fraction of the 60,000 tonnes produced by New Zealand supermarkets each year, it’s still an important example of positive social environmental change.

Orewa New World has become New Zealand’s first supermarket to install worm farms for recycling organic waste.

Store owner Steve McClean heard about the Why Waste worm farm subscription service from a family friend and thought it was a “marvellous idea”. After a consultation with the Auckland team they decided to install four worm farms outside the store.

How it Works

Staff feed the bins with up to 8kg a day of organic waste from the fresh produce department. That’s almost a tonne of waste each year being redirected from landfill and used to produce nutrient dense fertiliser. The worm farms are serviced monthly by Why Waste to ensure they are happy and remove any non-compostable items slipped in by the general public. Additional organic waste that’s not suitable for the worms is donated to the Orewa Forest School where it is used to feed pigs and chickens.

The supermarket also has a free herb garden growing on the store’s exterior, fed by fertiliser from the worm farms and available to the public. This is an example of truly regenerative practices that are simple and affordable steps toward positive social change.

“Worm farms are a great way to reduce green scraps and we’re looking forward to using the compost as nutrients for our exterior store gardens.”

Most supermarkets produce large amounts of food waste and New World Orewa is showing great leadership in creating a more sustainable supply chain.

We are stoked to have them on board supporting environmental sustainability one worm farm at a time and hope to see more supermarkets following in suit.
