Feed the whanau!
Still buzzing from Tuia 250's final landing at Mahia. We had 5 Waka Hourua this time, all beached together with a big powhiri, Maori choir's, Matauranga Maori education, celestial navigation and star compass tours. There were three smaller sailing waka hooning about and such a buzz about how epic the encounters of discovery will have been! Chocka full of crayfish, eel, fish, paua and kina, I sat on the beach and marvelled at the simultaneous simplicity and sophistication of how the Pacific voyagers occupied the entire Pacific hundreds of years before European ships ever left land.
We forgot. But we're are slowly remembering...
Saying goodbye to Wheke marae, our home in Rāpake, Wahakaroupo (Lyttleton harbour). Even just from the great level hospitality, it's easy to see the mana of the Ngai Tahu people is strong.
The Waka weaves the people together.

Today Leo steps aboard the Haunui (Hau - wind, nui - big) to assist on the Tuia250 leg sailing from Lyttelton Harbour to Mahia Peninsula. ⁠ ⁠ It's an honour to be a part of this kaupapa. With the presence of the replica of Cooks' Endeavour, Tuia250 has been scratching bi-cultural itches all over Aotearoa. ⁠ With voices being heard that were formerly ignored, conversations about the continued colonisation of this land have been activated, and often heated. It's been amazing listening and learning, and showing solidarity as a pakeha, and treaty ally. ⁠ ⁠ I believe we can have a more beautiful multi-cultural culture and country.
